A2 Writing — Sample Emails (35+ Words) with Commentary
5 min read

On the A2 exam (permanent residency) you write an email to a friend that must be at least 35 words long — and a text shorter than 35 words scores zero points outright, even if it's otherwise flawless. In this article you'll find four complete sample emails with commentary: three that would pass at the exam, and one deliberately bad one that shows the most common mistakes.
For a general overview of the whole writing section (form + email, scoring, time limit), see Writing on the Czech exam — here we focus only on the email and on what exactly a full-marks text should look like.
The A2 email rules in a nutshell
- You have 25 minutes for the whole writing section — the email is Task 2, worth 12 points (Task 1 is a form worth 8 points).
- The prompt comes with five pictures — you must write at least one sentence about each of them. A skipped picture = lost task-completion points.
- At least 35 words. A shorter text = 0 points for the whole task. Always count your words before submitting.
- You're writing to a friend → informal address ("tykání"), an informal greeting (Ahoj…) and sign-off (Měj se, Ahoj, Zatím).
Sample 1 — Birthday party invitation
Prompt: It's your birthday and you want to throw a party. Write an email to your friend Tomáš and invite him. Respond to five pictures: (1) the birthday and the invitation, (2) the day, (3) the time, (4) the place, (5) a request for a reply.
Ahoj Tomáši,
v sobotu mám narozeniny a chci tě pozvat na oslavu. Oslava bude v sobotu 21. června. Začneme v šest hodin večer. Oslava bude u mě doma, bydlím v Brně na ulici Krátká 5. Napiš mi prosím, jestli přijdeš.
Měj se hezky, Olena
Why it would pass (47 words): every sentence matches one picture — nothing is missing; the text is above the 35-word minimum; the greeting and sign-off are informal and consistent (informal "you" from start to finish); the sentences are short but complete. Notice that you don't need to write anything complicated — one simple, correct sentence per point is enough.
Sample 2 — Apology and a new meeting time
Prompt: You arranged to meet your friend Eva, but you can't make it. Write her an email: (1) apologize, (2) explain why, (3) suggest a new day, (4) suggest a time, (5) ask for confirmation.
Ahoj Evo,
moc se omlouvám, ale zítra nemůžu přijít na naši schůzku. Jsem nemocná a musím zůstat doma v posteli. Můžeme se sejít příští týden ve středu? Hodila by se ti čtvrtá hodina odpoledne? Napiš mi prosím, jestli ti to vyhovuje.
Zatím ahoj, Marija
Why it would pass (44 words): the apology comes right at the start (moc se omlouvám — I'm very sorry), the reason is simple and believable, the new day and time are phrased as a polite question, and the last sentence explicitly asks for confirmation. Useful phrases worth memorizing: moc se omlouvám, ale…; můžeme se sejít…?; hodila by se ti…?; napiš mi, jestli ti to vyhovuje.
Sample 3 — Asking for help with moving
Prompt (another typical format): You're moving to a new apartment and need help. Write an email to your friend Petr: (1) say that you're moving, (2) when, (3) ask for help, (4) say what needs to be done, (5) offer a thank-you (e.g. dinner).
Ahoj Petře,
mám novinku — příští měsíc se stěhuji do nového bytu. Stěhování bude v sobotu 5. října ráno. Chtěla bych tě poprosit, jestli mi můžeš pomoct. Potřebuji přenést krabice a jeden velký stůl. Potom tě pozvu na dobrou večeři. Ozvi se mi, prosím.
Díky moc a měj se, Aisha
Why it would pass (48 words): the request is polite (chtěla bych tě poprosit, jestli… — I'd like to ask you whether…), specific (what exactly needs to be done), and the email has a natural closing with a thank-you. If you're writing as a man, remember the correct gender forms: chtěl bych, stěhuji se stays the same, but rád instead of ráda.
Sample 4 — Not like this: 0 points for 24 words
Ahoj Tomáši,
mám narozeniny. Oslava sobota. V šest hodin. U mě doma. Přijď.
Ahoj
What's wrong: the text has only about 24 words — it's below the 35-word minimum, so it scores 0 points, even though it somehow touches on all five points of the prompt. On top of that, "Oslava sobota" isn't a sentence (there's no verb), and the whole text reads like a telegram, not an email. The fix is easy, though: expand each point into a full sentence (Oslava bude v sobotu. Začneme v šest hodin večer.) — and you're safely above the minimum.
A universal skeleton that works for every prompt
- Greeting: Ahoj + the name in the vocative case (Tomáši, Evo, Petře).
- First sentence for picture 1 — the main message (I'm inviting you / I'm sorry / I'm moving).
- Sentences for pictures 2–4 — always one full sentence per point.
- The last point of the prompt — almost always a request for a reply: Napiš mi, prosím, jestli…
- Sign-off + name: Měj se hezky / Zatím ahoj + your name.
Five points × one to two sentences ≈ 40–55 words — right in the ideal range (35–70 words). Before submitting: count the words, check that no picture is missing, and review gender agreement (byl jsem / byla jsem).
