The Czech Exam in 2027 — Dates and a Preparation Plan

4 min read

An open yearly calendar with a target month marked and a Czech textbook on the desk

The new year is the best moment to stop "wanting to pass the Czech exam someday" and to plan it instead: pick a target month, count the preparation backwards and register. This article deliberately does not list specific exam dates for 2027 — those are published and continuously updated by the official institutions — but it shows how the system of exam dates works and how to build your own realistic plan from it.

How exam dates work: A2 and B1 run on different rhythms

A2 (permanent residency): rolling dates at authorized schools

The A2 exam is run by roughly 29 authorized schools across the country, coordinated by NPI ČR. Sessions take place roughly once a month or more often, but each school keeps its own calendar — not every school offers every month. The current calendar of dates and venues is on the official page cestina-pro-cizince.cz. In practice this means that with A2 you usually don't wait for "the big date" — you rather pick a school and a month that suit you.

B1 + reálie (citizenship): ÚJOP UK exam dates

The B1 language exam and the separate reálie (civics) exam are run by ÚJOP UK. It announces dates on its pages, and their capacity fills up — whoever decides at the last minute easily finds the nearest free date months away. Current dates and registration are at ujop.cuni.cz. Remember that for citizenship you take two exams (language + reálie) — they can fall on different days, which for planning is actually an advantage: you don't have to manage everything at once.

Plan backwards from your target date

The most common mistake is planning forwards ("I'll start studying and we'll see"). It works the other way round — from the target date backwards:

  1. Pick a target month. Consider what you need the result for (e.g. filing a residency/citizenship application) and leave yourself a buffer — results and certificates don't arrive instantly, and room for a possible retake helps too.
  2. Subtract the preparation: at least 8 weeks of the final phase. If your Czech is already roughly at the exam level, count on 8 weeks of targeted format training — the exact schedule is in our 8-week study plan. If you are not at the level yet, add months of general language learning before this phase.
  3. Subtract registration. Register as soon as you know your target date — for B1 because of capacity, for A2 to secure a seat at your chosen school. How registration works step by step is in our registration walkthrough.

Example: goal "pass by June" → exam ideally in April/May (buffer for a retake) → final preparation from February/March → diagnostic test and registration in January. Which is exactly why it makes sense to start now.

Your January starting checklist

  • Clarify which exam you need — A2 for permanent residency, B1 + reálie for citizenship. If you are unsure, see the A2 vs. B1 comparison.
  • Take a diagnostic test in the real exam format: the A2 pack or the B1 pack — timed, no aids, with points broken down by module. The result tells you whether 8 weeks is enough or you need more.
  • Plan the budget. For A2, count on a fee of CZK 3,200 per attempt; check the current B1 and reálie fees directly with ÚJOP UK.
  • Reserve regular study time — 30–60 minutes 4–6 times a week beats weekend marathons. Train writing and speaking continuously with AI feedback.
  • Verify the dates on the official pages and register. Dates in any article (including this one) are not binding — the calendar changes over the year.

Summary

2027 is long enough to pass the exam without panic — provided you plan backwards: target month → 8+ weeks of final preparation following the plan → early registration. Start with a diagnostic test on the sample tasks this very week — it is the only step that requires no waiting at all.
